GILBERT AND SULLIVAN: MASTERS IN COLLABORATION
Michael Ainger
Oxford University Press Inc, USA
Hardcover - 544 pages

Amazon.co.uk Price: 31.34

Book Description
After exhaustive research into the D'Oyly Carte collection of documents, Ainger offers the most detailed account to date of Gilbert and Sullivan's starkly different backgrounds and long working partnership. "A Gilbert is of no use without a Sullivan," W.S. Gilbert once summed his reasons for persisting in his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan despite the combative nature of their relationship. Indeed, Michael Ainger suggests, it is the clash between these two strong personalities that accounts for the success of their work together, as each partner challenged the other to produce his best work.

GILBERT AND SULLIVAN
Hesketh Pearson
House of Stratus Ltd
Paperback - 183 pages

Amazon.co.uk Price: Please check website

Book Description
The operas of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan are a national institution. Hesketh Pearson's biography is of the two men who together formed a famous partnership and he is interested in them as individual, quite different personalities - one of the explanations behind their equally famous quarrel. Pearson describes their lives rather than criticise their works. As the operas such as The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance live on the stage, here their authors come to life in a biography.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN AND THE SAVOY OPERAS
Michael Ffinch
Weidenfeld & Nicholson
Hardback - 304 pages

Amazon.co.uk Price: Please check website

Book Description
The names of Gilbert and Sullivan are as irrevocably linked as Laurel and Hardy. The influence of these two extraordinary men on the language and style of the 19th century theatre was unique. In England they changed a whole generation's idea of the theatre, and in America they sparked off a craze for musical comedy which has endured to the 1990s. In this biography, Michael Finch traces the lives of writer and composer, both individually and as a partnership - a partnership which owes much to the creative enterprise and single-mindedness of Richard D'Oyly Carte. He writes of their temporary estrangement, their reconciliation, and, most importantly, discusses each of the operas from conception to performance.

ARTHUR SULLIVAN: A VICTORIAN MUSICIAN
Arthur Jacobs
Scolar Press
Hardcover - 504 pages

Book Description
This is a revised, enlarged edition of a book which on its original appearance in 1984 was hailed as a landmark in the study of Victorian musical life. It presents the figure of Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) not only as the celebrated co-creator of light operas with W.S. Gilbert, but as a composer of all sorts of music from symphony and concerto to ballads such as "The Lost Chord" and hymns such as "Onward Christian Soldiers". A prominent public life, with a knighthood in 1883, is contrasted with an unconventional private life with a liaison of almost 30 years with an American living in London, Mary Frances Ronalds. The author had access to Sullivan's diary at Yale University and to letters and other documents at the Peirpont Morgan Library in New York. An additional chapter updates research to the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth, 1992, and incorporates music examples.
