This is the single most important book in the library of a Gilbert and Sullivan lover. It contains the entire text of the 14 Savoy operas as now generally performed on the right hand page whilst on the left hand page Ian Bradley has noted explanations of words and phrases and also includes the words of many songs and sections of libretto that were cut from the repertoire by Gilbert. The book is well researched and full of useful information.

Book Description
The names of Gilbert and Sullivan are as irrevocably linked as Laurel and Hardy. The influence of these two extraordinary men on the language and style of the 19th century theatre was unique. In England they changed a whole generation's idea of the theatre, and in America they sparked off a craze for musical comedy which has endured to the 1990s. In this biography, Michael Finch traces the lives of writer and composer, both individually and as a partnership - a partnership which owes much to the creative enterprise and single-mindedness of Richard D'Oyly Carte. He writes of their temporary estrangement, their reconciliation, and, most importantly, discusses each of the operas from conception to performance.

A MOST INGENIOUS PARADOX:
THE ART OF GILBERT & SULLIVAN
Gayden Wren
Oxford University Press Inc, USA
Hardcover - 408 pages
Amazon.co.uk Price: Please check website
Book Description
Written more than a century ago, and initially regarded even by their creators as nothing more than light entertainment, the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan emerged over the course of the 20th century as the world's most popular body of musical-theatre works. Despite the works' resounding popularity and proven longevity however, most books written on Gilbert and Sullivan have focused on the authors, rather than their work. Examining all fourteen operas in detail, Gayden Wren offers a fresh look at the works themselves. He argues that the key to the operas' longevity lies not primarily in their clever lyrics, witty dialogue, or catchy music, but in the central themes underlying the characters and stories.
