Amazon.co.uk Customer Comment
The English National Opera company makes a wonderful job of my favourite (by far) Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. The casting is just superb. I have seen no better Pooh-bah, and Eric Idle's Ko Ko had me in stitches. The video comes with the highest recommendation, but the 'how-de-do' is you can't get it on VHS, so buy the highlights CD, and "b*gger the flowers of Spring". If you're in the States, buy the PAL video from Amazon.com, get your opera glasses out and sit as far from the TV as possible. You could almost be there.

Review posted at Amazon.co.uk - The Mikado given the Jive vibe
Well, they've done it to Shakespeare, they've certainly done it to Beethoven and the whole classical music repertoire, so why not update Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular operetta?
This production of The Mikado came to the stage in 1986 and was revived in 1995, which is the date of this recording. It transports the town of Titi-Pu into a 1940s swing era hot spot, with the three little maids sounding like the Andrews Sisters and the Mikado himself entering to a soft-shoe shuffle.
Sullivan's music is turned into a glorious mix of gospel, blues, swing and jive, with the occasional quiet, reflective ballad. The sound production gives the performance much more of a local theatre feel than the traditional G&S big stage chorus - the vocals are very theatrical and the backing instrumentation sounds very close-miked. Sound quality is excellent, clean with a nice warm bass tone, with the exception of a passage at the start of Act Two which sounds a bit compressed, as if someone's been over zealous with the sound-limiter control; never mind, all the well known songs are unaffected.
This is a different and very enjoyable rendition of a well-loved show and British institution. I suspect that it may be some time before this production is revived again, so anyone thinking about getting this do so quickly - you will not be disappointed.

Amazon.co.uk Customer Review
A good dose of nostalgia never hurts. If you are bitten by the G & S bug you eventually succumb to wondering about the likes of Henry Lytton, Darrell Fancourt and Bertha Lewis, and the atmosphere of the early days, this collection gives answers in the most appealing manner. The recording engineers have done a spectacular job in resuscitating performances of nearly eighty years standing.
Understandably the definition of the choral singing is low but the recording techniques of the time and the skill of the modern sound engineers give a clear rendition of the soloists.
It is delightful to hear the precise enunciation delivered in "the Queen's English" and clipped manner of delivery.
In the Mikado, Bertha Lewis shines out in the great tradition of British contraltos underscored by a wry and experienced Henry Lytton.
The only disappointment in all four CDs is the omission of the Usher's introductory song "Now, Jurymen hear my advice" from Trial by Jury. Overall a very reasonable investment for G & S lovers.
