DAYDREAMS: THE CHAMBER AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC OF ARTHUR SULLIVAN
Label: Somm
Performed by: Yeomans String Quartet, Murray McLaughlan, Jamie Walton
No of Discs: 1

Amazon.co.uk Price: £12.99

Review of this CD by Marc Shepherd
Most of the music on this CD was previously available only on a long out-of-print 1974 Pearl LP that, like this recording, presented all of Sullivan's surviving chamber and solo piano music. (He most likely wrote a good deal more such music in his youth that does not survive.)
Since then, a one-movement string quartet from his Leipzig days (1858) has been discovered. At 11:38, it is the most substantial work on the new CD. For the work of a boy of 16, it is a remarkably assured piece, and certainly it shows that Sullivan could have excelled in this genre, had he chosen to pursue it. His only other work for string quartet, written just a year later, is a three-minute romance.
The cello figures in three other pieces, "An Idyll" (1865), the meatier "Duo Concertante," Op. 2 (1868), and a Berthold Tours arrangement of "Slowly, slowly" from The Golden Legend.
Lastly, there are a number of solo piano pieces, including the six "Daydreams" (1867) and the two pieces called "Thoughts," No. 1 & 2 (1862). Another, labeled "Berceuse," is Sullivan's own arrangement of the lullaby from Cox and Box. As the notes observe, "the transformation is extraordinary. Far more than a piano reduction of the song, it is really a lyrical fantasia, in which an utterly different mood is superimposed." And finally, there are the Allegro Risoluto (1866) and "Twilight" (1868), a short piano piece dedicated to his then lover, Rachel Scott Russell.
Virtually all of this music dates from before Sullivan's association with W. S. Gilbert. Once he discovered his felicity for stage music, he abandoned chamber and solo piano music, although the accompaniments to his many songs show that he was a skilled composer for the piano. Most of the music on this CD is not recognizable as Sullivan, though it is none the worse for that.
The items are arranged in alternating styles and moods, as perhaps they would be in a concert. It makes for a soothing, if not very challenging, sixty-four minutes of enjoyment. This does mean, however, that the items are out of chronological order. Even the six Daydreams are split up on the disc.

Contents are as follows:
String Quartet, Daydreams No. 1, Daydreams No. 2, An Idyll, Allegro Risoluto, Daydreams No. 3, Daydreams No. 4, Slowly, Slowly, Daydreams No. 5, Daydreams No. 6, Berceuse, Romance for String Quartet, Thoughts No. 1, Thoughts No. 2, Twilight, Duo Concertante, Op. 2

THE ROSE OF PERSIA
Label: Cpo
Conductor: Tom Higgins
Orchestra:

Amazon.co.uk Price: £19.99

Amazon Customer Review
After much wrangling by a number of record companies, CPO at last re-issue this fully professional recording of Sir Arthur Sullivan's last completed work for the stage. Tom Higgins draws an excellent performance from a cast of experienced principal performers headed by Richard Suart as Hassan and Sally Harrison in the title role. The Southwark Voices provide an excellent chorus.
Sullivan's atmospheric, infectious and highly enjoyable score (punctuated with an unusually large number of dances for a Savoy Opera) is heard here in its' full glory, uncut, and in an edition prepared from the original autograph score. Librettist Basil Hood (of MERRIE ENGLAND fame) comes closer than any of Sullivan's other partners to the style of Gilbert, providing a rollocking tale of disguises and mistaken identities in the Persia of Arabian Nights mythology. Threats of beheadings and unsuitable weddings abound, to be resolved by a final twist of truly Gilbertian logic. All this resulted in a very respectable initial run of 213 performances in 1899 and extended provincial tours.
CPO provide copious notes and the full libretto of the musical numbers in three languages.
One thing to say, the original recording was sponsored, track by track, by members of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society (without whom the recording might never have been made). The original issue omitted to credit these people and sadly, as I understand the society was not involved with this reissue, the omission has not been rectified.
The six overtures used as a filler are beautifully played and recorded. All in all an excellent addition to the ever expanding commercial Sullivan recorded repertoire

THE ROSE OF PERSIA / EMERALD ISLE [BOX SET]
Label: Pearl
Conductor: Tom Higgins
Orchestra:

Amazon.co.uk Price: £28.99

Amazon Customer Review
These two works were composed by Sullivan at the very end of his life and represent a return to the style of his previous Savoy works with W S Gilbert. Both libretti are by Basil Hood (later to write MERRIE ENGLAND with Edward German). The score of THE EMERALD ISLE (left incomplete at the time of Sullivan's death) was completed by Edward German.
THE ROSE OF PERSIA first appeared at the Savoy in November 1899 where it enjoyed a very successful initial run before going on tour. The piece was revived in the 1930's in repertoire with MERRIE ENGLAND.
THE EMERALD ISLE was first produced at the Savoy in April 1901 (5 months after Sullivan's death) and this is the only recording ever released (again originally on L.P.)  With EMERALD ISLE of course one has the fun of spotting the numbers written by Sullivan and those by German. This would seem a simple matter as the vocal score allocates each number in the score to one or other composer and this is reproduced in the booklet. However, having produced the work myself, it became obvious in rehearsal (especially when the orchestra became involved) that numbers either attributed wholly to German or supposedly orchestrated by him, contained phrasing (either orchestra or vocal) that is very obviously the work of Sullivan. One assumes that Sullivan left orchestral and vocal sketches for many numbers that German then used as his starting point.
This recording of EMERALD ISLE is a delightful introduction to the work and, in the absence of any full-scale professional recording of either of these works, the set is a must for Sullivan lovers and lovers of Comic Opera in general.

THE MASQUE AT KENILWORTH
Label: Symposium
Performed by: Oxford Pro Musica Singers, Oxford Company of Musicians
Conducted by: Michael Smedley
No of Discs: 1

Amazon.co.uk Price: £10.99

Amazon.co.uk Customer Comment
Here is an interesting collection of Sullivan's shorter choral works, mainly pieces written for ceremonial occasions. None of them are likely to turn up in a concert hall near you, but they are rarely less than enjoyable, and occasionally something akin to inspiration sets in. For simple enjoyment there is the uproarious finale of the Te Deum -- play it to some musical friends and watch their faces as the brass band strikes up "Onward Christian Soldiers" under the chorus! In a more serious mood try the atmospheric setting of "How sleeps the moonlight" from "Kenilworth", or the justly celebrated partsong "The long day closes". The performances are spirited and sympathetic, though the chorus is really too small to do justice to the grandeur (or should that be grandiosity?) of Sullivan's conceptions.

SULLIVAN - BALLET MUSIC (THESPIS AND L'ILE ENCHANTEE)
Label: Marco Polo
Conductor: Andrew Penny
Orchestra: RTE Concert Orchestra
Number of Discs:1

Amazon.co.uk Customer Comment
It has been a quest over the years for G & S lovers to find the lost music for the G & S opus 1, THESPIS, first staged at the Gaiety Theatre in London on Boxing Day 1871. It was always suspected that much of the music had been recycled and indeed the entry chorus for the Thespians was re-used with minor changes to the lyrics in THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Here in fact was the clue to the re-discovery of the Act Two ballet as a comparison between the first four pages of 'Climbing over rocky mountain' (torn from a copyists manuscript score and bound into the PIRATES autograph), and pages for five numbers found amongst the material for Sullivan's early ballet L'ILE ENCHANTEE, revealed that they were from the same score, by the same copyist on the same paper.
In fact, examination of the five numbers that make up the THESPIS ballet reveals that only number 3, the Waltz, is a new composition, the other four appear in some form in the earlier L'ILE ENCHANTEE, and again in a further revision in the composer's 1897 ballet VICTORIA AND MERRIE ENGLAND.
English ballet in the 19th century was a very different art form to that which we know today. Based more in mime than in dance, L'ILE ENCHANTEE is a delightful piece of musical story-telling that would have been an excellent vehicle for the dancers of the day and, indeed, could well be revived by any of our smaller touring dance companies today. The THESPIS ballet, compact as it is (being part of a 2 act opera) is delightful, and provides one more piece in the jigsaw.
